Kathleen Marie Goans, a beloved member of the Harlan community, passed away on January 4, 2025, at her home in Kirkman, Iowa. Born on April 10, 1953, in Harlan to Allan and Lyla Thompson, Kathleen cherished her roles as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Raised on a family farm near Irwin, she graduated from Irwin-Kirkman School and later married Marvin “Sonny” Goans. Together, they had four children: Angela, Jennifer, Jason, and Joseph. Kathleen enjoyed family gatherings, especially at Prairie Rose Lake, and frequently supported her son Jason at the Shelby County Speedway.
In her working years, Kathleen was a familiar face at Harlan establishments, including The Ever-Green Inn and the Beer Barn in Kirkman, where she devoted 22 years. Since her retirement in 2020, she embraced her hobbies of gardening, baking, and reading.
