Beloved Harlan Community Member Maxine Book Passes Away at 80

Maxine Marie Book, a beloved member of the Harlan community, passed away recently at the age of 80. Born on November 11, 1942, in Earling, Iowa, she graduated from high school in 1960 and pursued her passion in cosmetology.
After marrying Raymond Book in 1963, the couple spent time in California before returning to Harlan to raise their five daughters. Maxine owned a salon in Harlan until her retirement in 2005 and later worked at Kate Kohorst’s office for five years.
An active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild since 1966, Maxine loved gardening, sewing, and staying fit with yoga and water aerobics. She enjoyed traveling with family and creating lasting memories, especially during family card games.
Maxine is survived by her husband Ray, her daughters, nine grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and siblings. A visitation will be held at St. Michael’s Church in Harlan, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial.
