The Harlan community mourns the loss of Rose Sondag, 96, a beloved figure whose warmth and culinary skills at local establishments touched many. From her early years in Shelby County to her role as a dedicated mother, her legacy will be cherished.

Beloved Harlan Community Member Rose Sondag Passes Away at 96

Rose Ann Jensen Sondag, a cherished member of the Harlan community, passed away on August 22, 2024, at the age of 96. Born on March 2, 1928, in rural Shelby County, she grew up on a farm near Irwin and graduated from Irwin High School in 1945.

After attending business college in Omaha, Rose worked at the Nishnabotna Valley REC, where she met her husband, John Sondag. The couple married in 1948 and had five sons, living most of their lives in the Irwin area. Rose was a dedicated mother and worked as a secretary at Irwin-Kirkman High School for a decade.

Rose and John also owned and operated local establishments, including the J & R Lounge and the Rose Petal Supper Club, beloved for her renowned prime rib.

She was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan and enjoyed playing cards with friends in her later years.

There will be no public funeral service, as per her wishes. A private family inurnment will take place at Harlan Cemetery later. Memorials may be directed to Irwin Fire and Rescue.
