Beloved Harlan Educator Helen Wubbenhorst Passes at 91

Harlan community member Helen Mary Wubbenhorst, 91, passed away on January 7, 2025, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan.

Born on September 1, 1933, near Westphalia, Iowa, Helen was deeply committed to education. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Alverno College and taught for 17 years in Nebraska and Wisconsin, including time as an elementary school principal.

In 1979, she married Dwight Wubbenhorst, and the couple divided their time between Herman, Nebraska, and Mesa, Arizona. After Dwight’s passing in 2010, Helen moved to Harlan, where she continued her passion for writing and the arts.

Helen is survived by her sister-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on January 13, 2025, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, with visitation on January 12 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home.
