Joseph Stein, a beloved member of the Harlan community, passed away at 82, leaving behind cherished memories of family, laughter, and service. His dedication to both family and community will be honored with a graveside service offering military respect.
Joseph Micheal Stein, a cherished figure in Harlan, Iowa, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024, at the age of 82. Born on January 13, 1942, Joe grew up on a family farm near Portsmouth and graduated from Harlan High School in 1959.
He served as a medic in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and later returned to Harlan, where he built a family with his wife, Diane, and welcomed three children. Joe was known for his work at Farmland Foods and enjoyed gardening, storytelling, and spending quality time with his six grandchildren.
Joe was proud of his German heritage, loved to cheer on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Kansas City Chiefs, and had a passion for creating things in his workshop. He touched many lives in the community, often sharing homemade snacks and his warm presence.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on December 6, 2024, at Harlan Cemetery. For those wishing to honor his memory, memorials can be directed to the family.
