David “Buffy” Eugene Bissen, a cherished member of the Harlan community, passed away on October 29, 2025, at his home in rural Defiance after battling cancer. He was 77 years old.

Born on April 30, 1948, near Portsmouth, David was a proud veteran, having served in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart. He married Peggy Kathlene Assmann in 1970, and together they raised four children: Ronda, Tina, Chad, and Travis.

A dedicated farmer and business owner, David operated Bissen Salvage while being actively involved in local organizations, including the Defiance American Legion Post and the Buck Grove Community Club. He was known for his community spirit, particularly his annual nut fry and commitment to honoring veterans.

David enjoyed spending time with his family, cheering on his grandchildren, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He is survived by his wife, children, 12 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held, with a Celebration of Life on November 1 at St. Peter’s Parish Center.
