Harlan Municipal Utilities (HMU) is celebrating 30 years of providing cable TV and internet services to the Harlan community. The journey began with a vote in 1995 that established municipal broadband services, launching cable and internet in 1996.
Over the years, HMU has expanded its offerings, including telephone services added in 2001.
Today, HMU serves the community with advanced fiber connections, ensuring reliable and high-speed internet access. In April 2024, HMU upgraded its internet carriers, doubling speeds for customers and enhancing services with a new cloud-based email platform.
HMU also introduced a wireless router called the GigaSpire, allowing users to control their home networks via a smartphone app. This innovation complements new smart home applications available to residents.
Local programming continues to thrive, with upgraded high-definition broadcasts of school and community events, many of which can be viewed on YouTube.
