Local church leaders unite congregations from across Shelby County in interfaith gathering for prayer and healing
Sunday evening's Community Prayer Rally at Merrill Field brought together an estimated 200 or more believers from churches across the Shelby County area in a powerful display of interfaith unity and shared faith. The 30-45 minute gathering, organized by local church leaders, drew participants from congregations throughout the region, with people gathering both on the field and in the stadium seating.
United in Song and Prayer
Katie Petersen, the event's main organizer, opened the rally by acknowledging the current challenging climate facing Christians in America. She noted how the massive Charlie Kirk memorial service taking place that same day was drawing millions of viewers worldwide to hear the gospel—demonstrating how God can bring hope and purpose even from tragic events like Kirk's assassination on September 10th.
Petersen shared her concerns about the current climate, expressing that she had felt some fear about whether it was even safe for Christians to gather together in public for prayer in America. However, she emphasized that this fear was exactly why the community needed to be courageous and hold such events.
Following her opening remarks, Petersen led the crowd in starting the national anthem before the entire audience took over and sang together. This was followed by Scripture readings, reflections, and prayers from pastors representing four local churches: Chad Hol from Grace Baptist, Joshua Salazar from First Baptist, Jeff Erlemeier from Faith Family, and Chris Danielson from Fresh Encounter.
Each pastor focused on themes of trusting God during difficult times, reflecting the rally's core purpose of seeking divine guidance and strength amid challenging circumstances. The event was specifically held in response to recent tragic events that have shaken the nation, including the Kirk assassination, as participants sought collective prayer for families, youth, community healing, and national leadership.
The gathering concluded with the crowd singing beloved hymns "It Is Well with My Soul" and "Amazing Grace," creating a moment of unity that transcended denominational boundaries.
Building on Existing Collaboration
The prayer rally represents part of an ongoing tradition of inter-church cooperation in the Harlan area. Local youth groups already rotate quarterly between different churches for special youth night events, demonstrating the collaborative spirit that made Sunday's rally possible.
Following the formal program, pastors and volunteers remained available for individual prayer requests, allowing for personal ministry time before attendees departed at their own pace.
The event maintained a clear focus on trusting in God and believers uniting together in prayer, seeking after Christ and placing their trust in Him during uncertain times.
The turnout of 200-plus participants from across the Shelby County area demonstrates the strong faith community presence in the region and the appetite for events that bring believers together across denominational lines. With churches from Harlan and surrounding communities represented, the rally served as both a spiritual gathering and a testament to the area's interfaith cooperation.
