Drive Sober This Holiday Season, Harlan!

The holiday season is here, and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is urging Harlan residents to drive sober as Christmas and New Year celebrations approach. In partnership with local law enforcement, the campaign emphasizes the importance of designating a sober driver before celebrating.

According to Iowa State Patrol Trooper Shelby McCreedy, December often sees a spike in impaired driving incidents, with nearly 990 OWI arrests logged in December 2023 alone. Last year, eight fatalities were reported on Iowa roads during the holidays, with three linked to alcohol.

Residents are reminded of safe alternatives for getting home, including designating a sober driver or using rideshare services. Local sober ride programs may also be available, providing a safer and cost-effective option compared to the potential $10,000 expense of an OWI conviction. Always plan ahead and report any impaired drivers to law enforcement for everyone’s safety.
