Grandma B's Dream Playground Re-Imagined: Building a More Inclusive Future for Harlan's Pioneer Park
From playground to inclusive paradise: After nearly 30 years, Harlan's beloved Dream Playground is getting reimagined as Grandma B's Dream Playground - an all-inclusive space designed for all abilities and ages, setting a new standard for accessible recreation in Shelby County.

Community rallies to transform 30-year-old wooden playground into state-of-the-art inclusive play space
For nearly three decades, the Dream Playground at Pioneer Park has been a cornerstone of childhood memories in Harlan. Now, as the beloved wooden structure approaches the end of its natural lifespan, community leaders are seizing the opportunity to create something extraordinary: an all-inclusive playground designed to serve children and adults of all abilities for generations to come.
A Legacy of Community Spirit
The original Dream Playground, built through community volunteer efforts in 1995, has served Harlan families for almost 30 years – well beyond its expected 20-25 year lifespan. "The community came together and built the actual wooden playground," explains Tim Miller, Harlan's Park Superintendent. "But like any normal wooden structure, it doesn't last forever, and it's showing signs of wear."
Reimagining Play for Everyone
The new vision, dubbed "Grandma B's Dream Playground Re-Imagined" thanks to a generous contribution from the Buman family, goes far beyond simply replacing aging equipment. The $1.6 million project will create a truly inclusive space featuring advanced amenities like poured-in-place rubber surfacing, making the playground accessible to wheelchairs, walkers, and people of all mobility levels.
"We felt it was very important to build this to where it is all inclusive," Miller emphasizes. "Everybody can go down and have a great time at this new playground."
Features That Foster Connection
The reimagined playground will maintain the fun and active spirit of its predecessor while introducing innovative new elements. Plans include a main structure with 6-7 slides and extensive ramp access, multiple climbing features, an all-inclusive merry-go-round, and even an electronic dance game called the Sona Arch. The design also incorporates numerous sensory panels and interactive elements throughout the space.
"One of the biggest things that you don't see on the plans that actually sold us on this design is there's a bunch of sensory panels and different things that hang up on the gates and fences that people are able to play with," Miller notes.
A Regional Draw for Inclusive Recreation
The project team envisions the playground serving not just Harlan but the entire Shelby County area. As one of the few fully inclusive playgrounds in the region, it promises to become a destination for families seeking accessible recreation options.
"We're kind of on the forefront of it," Miller says, noting that while some communities have begun building inclusive playgrounds, few match the comprehensive scope of Harlan's vision.
Community Support Driving Progress
With over $600,000 raised toward their $900,000 local contribution goal, the project has garnered substantial community support through private donations, business contributions, and memorial gifts. The remaining funds will be matched through state and local grants, bringing the vision to life.
"The Harlan and Shelby County community is a very generous community, and we can't thank them enough for the support that we've had," Miller shares.
