The City of Harlan is set to begin a significant sanitary sewer project this fall, with a budget of $1.1 million funded partly by a $500,000 CDBG award and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocations.
Municipal Pipe Tool Company will conduct two phases of work, starting with the cleaning and inspection of sewer mains this week. The second phase, slated for November, will involve curing-in-place pipe lining across approximately four miles of sewer lines.
City Administrator Gene Gettys noted that the repairs are essential for maintaining the efficiency of the sewer system, which handles all household sewage. Residents can expect crews working in various neighborhoods, including Court Street, Baldwin Street, and Victoria Street.
While the repairs may impact some street access temporarily, the main sewer services will remain operational. Residents are encouraged to keep pets secure during the work and may need to seek alternate routes when necessary.
