Harlan Deputies Arrest Malvern Man After High-Speed Chase
Harlan/Shelby County deputies arrested a 34‑year‑old Malvern man after a late‑night, 80+ mph chase across Shelby and Pottawattamie counties that ended in a crash on the I‑29/I‑80 expressway. He faces drug-possession, eluding and reckless-driving charges.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (Harlan) reports a Malvern man was arrested after a late‑night high‑speed chase across Shelby and Pottawattamie counties Saturday.
Police identified the suspect as 34‑year‑old Nicholas James Gragg. He faces multiple charges including possession of a controlled substance (second offense), prohibited acts, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, eluding, and several citations.
The pursuit began about 9:30 p.m. when deputies tried to stop a vehicle reported at more than 80 mph on Highway 59 near County Road F‑32. The driver fled south through Avoca, Hancock and Oakland, then west on Highway 6 into Council Bluffs.
Shelby County deputies attempted a PIT maneuver. The vehicle later crashed near the 4.9‑mile marker of the I‑29/I‑80 expressway. The suspect tried to run but was immediately taken into custody.
Sheriff’s deputies thanked Pottawattamie County, Iowa State Patrol, Council Bluffs police and fire for assistance.
