Over the upcoming weeks, the Walks to End Alzheimer’s will take place in 19 Iowa cities, including Harlan, aiming to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's disease.
Each walk features a two-mile course, welcoming participants who may not be able to walk to join in supportive activities and connect with others affected by the disease.
The Des Moines event is expected to be the largest, attracting around 2,000 participants on September 27th. A highlight of the event is the Promise Garden ceremony where colored flowers symbolize the various reasons for walking, showcasing the community's strength and connection.
In Iowa alone, over 62,000 people live with Alzheimer's, supported by more than 80,000 caregivers. This year, the fundraising goal is set at $1.4 million, which will go towards local educational resources, support groups, and critical research efforts aimed at prevention and treatment.
