Harlan High School Launches Student-Operated Café Initiative

Harlan Community High School is gearing up to launch The Cyclone Corner Café, a student-operated coffee shop funded by a STEM BEST® Grant. This initiative aims to enhance student learning and prepare them for future careers through hands-on business experience.

Set to open in the renovated high school for the 2025-2026 school year, the café will allow students to gain practical skills in business management, customer service, and marketing. The café will initially offer a limited menu featuring coffee, smoothies, and ice cream, with hopes for future expansions including seasonal drinks.

Leadership for the café will come from business teachers Chad Swanson and Jacie Stuerman, leveraging partnerships with local businesses for mentorship and equipment support. The grant, totaling nearly $60,000, will cover necessary equipment and staff training, ensuring that students receive valuable, real-world learning experiences.

This exciting venture not only promotes entrepreneurship but will also serve as a community hub for students, staff, and residents to gather and support innovative learning.
