Harlan High School Students Transform Downtown Crosswalks with Art

HARLAN — Harlan Community High School students have added a splash of creativity to the downtown area by transforming crosswalks into vibrant art installations. On September 9, nine students dedicated their day to painting murals across 6-foot by 50-foot crosswalks, creating cheerful visuals that uplift the community.

This initiative is part of the Community Canvas project, spearheaded by the Shelby County Wellness Alliance, with previous efforts including a mural at the Harlan Movie Theatre. After a year of planning and collaboration with local schools and the city, this project emphasizes the importance of public art in Shelby County.

The selected murals, themed Fruits, Stripes, Bubbles, and Daisies, aim to make Harlan's downtown unique and inviting for both residents and visitors. Students expressed pride in the chance to contribute to their community, noting how this experience deepens their connection to Harlan.

With community support, including donations from local businesses, this artistic endeavor heralds a hopeful future for further public art projects in the area.
