Harlan High's Coach Osborn Retires After Legendary Career

Mitch Osborn, the third-winningest coach in Iowa boys basketball history, has officially retired from coaching at Harlan High School. Over his impressive career, Osborn achieved 770 wins—including 504 at Harlan over 29 seasons—and led the Cyclones to two state championships and 19 state tournament appearances.

Osborn's journey was not without challenges; after being diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma in 2014, he continued to coach, demonstrating resilience and commitment to his team and community. The recent loss to Glenwood in the 3A-1 substate marked a bittersweet end to his coaching career, bringing a flood of emotions.

Players, former and current, are grateful for Osborn’s impact on their lives. Jeff Bissen, a former player and now athletic director at Glenwood, credited Osborn with instilling a competitive spirit and discipline in his players.

As he steps away from the sidelines, Osborn looks forward to spending quality time with his grandchildren. He hopes to continue supporting the athletes coming up in the program he helped build.
