HARLAN — Harlan Municipal Utilities (HMU) has been a vital resource for the community, providing electricity for over 130 years. The city's move towards electric power began in the 1880s, culminating in a special election in January 1891, where residents overwhelmingly voted to establish a municipal light plant.
Today, HMU is nearing completion on a significant project to move all overhead power lines underground, enhancing reliability and aesthetics within Harlan. Chief Executive Officer Joe Rueschenberg stated that all primary and secondary lines will eventually be buried, improving maintenance and community appearance.
Power for Harlan is sourced primarily from hydroelectric dams along the Missouri River, complemented by MidAmerican Energy. HMU also maintains two diesel generators for peak demand times and has made recent upgrades to its monitoring systems for improved efficiency.
HMU serves around 2,853 meters and last adjusted its electricity rates in 2017, ensuring fair pricing based on power costs and maintenance.
