Harlan Newspapers has received several prestigious awards at the 2025 Iowa Newspapers Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. The newspaper earned First Place in Community Service for its significant efforts following the devastating tornado that struck rural Shelby County in 2024. Their work included compiling a report that helped secure FEMA's disaster designation for the county and raising over $1,200 for tornado relief efforts.

Former General Manager Mike Kolbe emphasized the importance of community collaboration in these efforts. Harlan Newspapers publisher Joshua Byers noted the paper's history of excelling in state competitions, with the newspaper winning community service accolades multiple times in the past.
