Harlan is gearing up for a major event as it has been designated the first overnight stop for the 2026 Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). The bike ride will take place on July 19, with an expected 20,000 participants passing through Shelby County.
Mayor Jay Christensen and city officials celebrated this announcement at a special event in Waukee. The ride will begin in Onawa and cover 58.5 miles to reach Harlan. The route will travel through several communities before concluding in Dubuque.
City Administrator Gervas Mjonga emphasized that hosting RAGBRAI presents a wonderful opportunity for Harlan to showcase its hospitality, local businesses, and community spirit.
Preparations are underway, with city officials discussing logistics, including transportation, accommodations, and safety measures. Volunteer recruitment efforts will soon begin, engaging residents and organizations to ensure a successful event.
