Harlan Remembers Dave Stessman: A Legacy of Love and Service

Harlan resident Dave Theodore Stessman, aged 96, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2024. Born in Panama, Iowa on April 21, 1928, Dave was the eldest of ten children and a lifelong dedicated worker, starting his own business, Dave’s Garage, before working at the Ford Dealership in Harlan.

Dave’s life was enriched after marrying Margie Goeres in 1950. During the Korean War, he served as an airplane mechanic before returning to Harlan and eventually opening Stessman Service in nearby Defiance. He enjoyed a fulfilling retirement, spending winters in Arizona and cherishing moments with family, including his children and grandchildren.

After Margie's passing in 2005, he married Janice in 2007. He was known for his love of dancing, card games, and restoring vintage vehicles.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance on September 5, 2024, with burial following at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and love for his community.
