Harlan native Thomas "Sam" Arthur Wunder Sr. passed away on November 18, 2024, at the age of 79. Born in Harlan, IA, he dedicated 22 years to the US Navy Submarine Service, retiring in 1986.
Following his naval career, he worked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a Nuclear Propulsion instructor until 2007.
Tom's life was filled with love, family, and community service. He is survived by his wife Joyce, two children, and several grandchildren. Known for hosting gatherings, Tom's culinary talent, especially with his famous yeast rolls, brought joy to many during holiday celebrations.
Tom also demonstrated his commitment to community through service to organizations like the American Legion and Knights of Columbus.
Friends and family gathered on November 26, 2024, for a memorial service at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Newport News, VA, with military honors to follow at a later date.
