Harlan Municipal Utilities (HMU) responded quickly to a significant gas leak reported on Friday, December 13, prompting a mandatory evacuation in the vicinity of 4th & Hill Street.
Emergency responders, including the Harlan Fire Department, quickly assessed the situation after HMU personnel identified a cracked valve flange. They successfully stopped the gas flow and conducted safety tests to ensure the area was safe for residents and businesses to return.
The Emergency Management team provided shelter at the Veterans Memorial Building for displaced residents and pets during the incident.
HMU's Gas Superintendent, Colburn Warner, thanked the first responders for their swift actions, noting this was one of the largest leaks he had personally encountered.
