Harlan School Audit: Two Findings, Infrastructure Costs Drive Expenses
Harlan residents: district revenue edged up 2% while expenses jumped 5.4% — driven by costly infrastructure projects. Auditor flagged two findings on taxpayer funds, one repeated. See what this means for local schools.
HARLAN — The Harlan Community School District’s audit for the year ending June 30, 2025, shows modest revenue growth and higher costs.
Schroer & Associates reports total revenue of $26,659,692, a 2.02% increase from last year. Expenses rose 5.39% to $25,479,104, driven largely by increased school infrastructure spending.
The audit lists two findings involving the receipt and use of taxpayer funds: incomplete documentation of closed sessions and variances in certified enrollment. One finding was a repeat from the prior year. Schroer & Associates offered recommendations to the district.
The Board of Education is reminded of its fiduciary oversight role for district finances and operations.
