Harlan Schools Progress on $22 Million Facilities Upgrade

The Harlan Community School District is making significant strides in its extensive facilities project. Superintendent Jenny Barnett announced that high school teachers have already moved into new classrooms following the Christmas break.

In September 2022, local voters approved a $22.1 million bond to renovate and upgrade all four district buildings, aimed at creating a modern learning environment for students.

Currently, the focus is on constructing a new Intermediate School that will double the existing space, enabling better collaboration among third-grade teachers. Enhanced classroom layouts and more windows are also part of the plan.

The project addresses essential roofing updates at the Middle School and includes library modernization. While minimal work is needed at the Primary School, a handicapped-accessible playground will be installed.

Barnett expects the entire renovation to be completed by the start of the 2025-2026 school year. Additionally, a safety vestibule will be installed at the Middle School starting this summer, funded by a separate safety grant.
