Harlan Students Shine at Peru State Math Challenge

Peru State College recently hosted its 31st annual Mathematics Challenge, welcoming 13 schools from Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri. Students from Harlan participated in various math competitions, demonstrating their skills in subjects like geometry, algebra, precalculus, and calculus.
Local standout Micaiah Niemoth from Harlan High School took first place in the calculus competition. In addition, a team from Harlan secured second place in the algebra team category, showcasing the strong math talent within our community.
The event featured both individual exams and team challenges, with a total of 40-question exams for individuals and open-ended questions for teams. Organizers reported a record number of participants this year, reflecting a growing interest in math competitions among students.
Dr. Laura McCauley, co-director of the event, expressed gratitude to the schools and volunteers who contributed to the success of the challenge.
