Harlan Students Showcase Tech Help Desk at Capitol
Four Harlan students brought their student‑run help desk to the State Capitol, demonstrating Chromebook repairs and advanced IT skills funded by an Lt. Governor’s STEM scholarship — advocating for tech career training in Shelby County.
Four Harlan Community School District students traveled to Des Moines on Jan. 26 to showcase the district’s Student‑Led Help Desk during the School Administrators of Iowa “Day on the Hill.”
Now in its second year, the program — led by HCSD IT staff Jeremy Poore and Jim Billings — gives students hands‑on tech experience repairing Chromebooks, learning advanced IT skills and pursuing industry certifications.
The help desk grew with funding from a NLGA Lt. Governors’ STEM scholarship secured by Kyleigh Kumm, supplying professional tools and resources for the classroom.
Students explained their daily work to state leaders and advocated for career‑connected learning that prepares Harlan youth for jobs in technology.
