Harlan Students Walk to Courthouse in ICE Protest

About 10 students from Harlan Community High School walked out of class Friday afternoon to protest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The student-organized action was not sanctioned by the district.

The group left school at 2:15 p.m. and walked down Durant Street to the Shelby County Courthouse. Six adults joined the students in solidarity. Participants said they were motivated by concerns over immigration enforcement and personal family situations.

Principal Casey Ring notified parents ahead of the walkout, reminding families students may peacefully protest but those who leave during instructional time will be marked absent under district attendance rules. School officials said student safety is their top priority.

Organizers reported receiving some negative comments from passersby but continued to the courthouse.
