Harlan Voters Navigate Absentee Ballot Requests Ahead of November Election

The Shelby County Auditor's Office has reported an influx of absentee ballot request forms being sent to voters, causing some confusion. Auditor Mark Maxwell clarified that voters may receive multiple requests due to mass mailings by political parties and organizations, but each voter's application is accurately tracked. Only one ballot will be mailed per verified request.

Starting October 16, ballots will be mailed to those who have submitted requests, and in-person absentee voting will be available at the courthouse located at 612 Court Street in Harlan. Voters must ensure their mailed ballot requests reach the Auditor's office by 5:00 p.m. on October 21, as no requests will be honored after this date.

Ballots returned by mail need to be received by the Auditor's office by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 5, to count. Residents who haven't received a request form but wish to vote absentee can download one from the Iowa Secretary of State's website or contact the Shelby County Auditor’s Office.
