Harlan’s Becky Mahoney Promotes Local Scouting Growth
At a Carroll Chamber coffee, Harlan field director Becky Mahoney and Scouting America leaders highlighted Carroll County as the district’s largest scouting hub and called for volunteers as local programs expand — find how Harlan residents can join.
Representatives from Scouting America spoke at the Carroll Chamber of Commerce coffee on Feb. 6, including Harlan's field director Becky Mahoney and Ohwahnasee District executive Ashley Wenck.
They highlighted a strong local scouting presence: Carroll County hosts the district’s largest concentration of units, with Cub Scout packs and BSA troops in Carroll, Manning and Glidden. Carroll County membership stands at 48 Cub Scouts and 31 Scouts BSA.
Troop 105 Scoutmaster Mike Best and Scouts Harrison Hackfort, Damian Best and Brandan Best joined the presentation, posting flags and leading the Pledge of Allegiance.
Wenck said Scouting America focuses on leadership, outdoor skills, citizenship and character-building for youth. The district currently offers Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA and hopes to expand into programs like Exploring and Sea Scouts.
Harlan residents involved in scouting or interested in youth programs may find growth and volunteer opportunities locally.
