Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa, has made history by clinching his 13th IMCA Sunoco Stock Car national title in 2024, surpassing the previous record held by late racing legend Ernie Derr.
Nichols, who has been a prominent figure in the racing scene since 2002, achieved this record-breaking year with 30 feature wins and four track titles, bringing his career totals to an impressive 657 feature wins and 51 track championships.
While celebrating his success, Nichols emphasized that comparing racing eras can be challenging, acknowledging the legacy of Ernie Derr, who last won in 1971. After competing locally at tracks including Shelby County Speedway and others, Nichols plans to relocate to Texas with his wife, Anita, where he hopes to find a new acreage.
