Discover the rich agricultural heritage of Shelby County as a historic barn, cherished since 1910, takes the spotlight in a statewide tour. Join the celebration of Iowa's unique barn architecture on September 14-15—an opportunity to share nostalgic farming stories and explore!
A historic barn in Shelby County will be part of the Iowa Barn Foundation’s statewide tour on September 14 and 15. This annual event showcases 92 restored barns across Iowa, highlighting efforts to preserve the state’s agricultural heritage.
The barn, owned by Dennis and Linda Heflin, has been in the family since 1910. After facing disrepair, Heflin successfully applied for restoration funding from the Iowa Barn Foundation, helping to maintain the unique structure built in 1901.
Heflin's barn features a distinctive roof style described as “Queen Anne, equidistant, cross gabled, truncated.” It remains the last of its kind in the area. Visitors to the tour often share nostalgic stories about their own farming experiences.
This year's tour also includes eleven round barns, making it a diverse showcase of Iowa's barn architecture. The self-guided tour is free and open to the public.
