Improve Water Quality: Join DNR Meetings on Lake Treatments

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hosting two public meetings to discuss a significant water quality improvement initiative at Prairie Rose Lake and Green Valley Lake.

The meeting for Green Valley Lake will take place on March 26 at 6:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Performing Arts Center. For Prairie Rose Lake, residents can attend on March 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the Harlan Public Library.

During these sessions, the DNR will explain the proposed alum treatment designed to lower phosphorus levels, which contribute to harmful algae blooms in the lakes. This nontoxic aluminum sulfate will be applied from barges over a two-week period between April 1 and May 15, subject to weather conditions. Additional treatments are also anticipated in the fall of 2025.

Community members are encouraged to participate and learn how these efforts will enhance local water quality.
