Each fall, agronomy students at Iowa State embark on a unique pre-semester field trip to foster community and connections. This year, students visited several farms in southwest Iowa, culminating in a memorable farm-to-table dinner hosted by local alums Daniel and Ellen Walsh-Rosmann in Harlan.
The trip included tours of Iowa Cover Crop in Jefferson and the Wallace Farm before welcoming students to Milk & Honey, the couple's restaurant known for its locally sourced dishes. Freshmen reported that the experience opened their eyes to career opportunities in agriculture while allowing them to engage with community members.
Students also had the chance to visit Agriland FS and Farm Service Cooperative in Harlan, where they interacted with enthusiastic alums eager to share their experiences.
Peer mentors noted the trip was vital for building friendships and easing the transition to college life. As the academic year progresses, the learning community will stay connected through events and activities, ensuring these valuable relationships continue.
