Log Cabin Restoration Nears Completion in Harlan

The restoration of the Shelby County Historical Museum's log cabins is almost complete, marking a significant milestone for local history. This project, collaboration with Heritage Woodworks, began this spring to preserve the McIntosh and Leland Log Cabins. Efforts included extensive repairs, cleaning, and renovations to ensure the structures remain a part of Harlan's heritage.

Executive Director Sarah McDonald highlighted that this is the first major preservation effort since the cabins were relocated in the 1970s. The project benefitted from a memorial donation in memory of Gailyn and Linda Larsen and support from over 100 local community members. The Hitchcock Family Foundation also provided a grant.

Local businesses and residents contributed materials and expertise, fostering a strong community spirit around this initiative.

Mark your calendars! Santa Claus will visit the cabins on December 12 from 5-7 p.m., providing a festive photo opportunity for families. A dedication celebration for the cabins is also planned for spring.
