Peggy Hansen, 88, a longtime Shelby County fixture with roots in Elk Horn, Kimballton and Jacksonville, died Feb. 17 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. Known for decades of local service and community leadership — visitation Mar. 1; funeral Mar. 2.

Longtime Shelby County Resident Peggy Hansen Dies at 88

Peggy Lou (Andersen) Hansen, a long-time Shelby County resident with deep ties to Elk Horn, Kimballton and Jacksonville, died Feb. 17, 2026, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. She was 88.

A 1955 Harlan Community High School graduate, Peggy married Roland “Rollie” Hansen soon after and raised three children. She worked locally at Landmands National Bank, the Danish Windmill, Salem Nursing Home and the Danish Immigrant Museum, helped run Hansen’s Kro bed-and-breakfast with Rollie, and served in leadership for the Rural Mail Carriers Association.

Peggy was known for her faith, community involvement, love of family, card games and cheering on grandchildren — and for traveling with Rollie as snowbirds to Arizona.

Visitation is Sunday, March 1, 2–4 p.m. at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan. Funeral is Monday, March 2, 10:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, with burial in Jacksonville Cemetery.
