New Committee Takes Aim at Shelby County Jail Challenges

A new Public Safety Project Committee has been established to assess the future of the Shelby County Jail, addressing pressing issues identified during recent inspections. Jail Administrator Kyle Lindberg highlighted concerns regarding the outdated facility, originally built in 1983, citing significant infrastructure and safety challenges.

The committee aims to begin discussions on potential solutions over the next few years, including the possibility of constructing a new jail or retrofitting an existing building to better serve the community's needs, particularly addressing mental health and substance abuse issues among inmates.

Consisting of 13 members, the committee includes local public safety officials and officials from Harlan to ensure a comprehensive approach to public safety in Shelby County. Lindberg is also seeking three civilian members from outside Harlan to join the discussion. Interested individuals can reach out via email to become involved.
