Prairie Rose Lake's Alum Treatment Boosts Fishing and Clarity
Recent Alum treatment at Prairie Rose Lake has dramatically boosted water clarity, enhancing the fishing experience for Harlan and Shelby County residents. With visibility jumping to 20 feet, local anglers are already reaping the rewards. Discover the impact!

The recent Alum treatment at Prairie Rose Lake has proven to be a resounding success, significantly enhancing water clarity. DNR Fisheries Biologist John Lorenzen reported that visibility improved from seven feet to an impressive 20 feet almost immediately after the treatment.
This clarity is not only a treat for local anglers but also benefits the overall ecosystem of the lake. Lorenzen experienced this firsthand, catching 35 fish—half crappie and half bluegill—right after the application.
However, the increased clarity comes with challenges. The enhanced sunlight can lead to increased vegetation growth, which the DNR will need to manage as summer progresses.
Residents of Harlan and Shelby County can look forward to enjoying improved fishing conditions at Prairie Rose. For more in-depth information about the Alum treatment outcomes, visit the original article here.
