The Southwest Iowa Transit Authority has achieved a remarkable milestone with over 552,000 rides in the past year, outpacing other rural transit in Iowa. Learn how this success and ongoing community development efforts are transforming life in Harlan and beyond.
The Southwest Iowa Transit Authority (SWITA) has reported a record-breaking 552,231 rides provided to the public in fiscal year 2024, a significant increase from previous years. This achievement was highlighted at the annual meeting held in Harlan, where transit director Mark Lander received recognition for a decade of service.
Leading the state in ridership, SWITA’s numbers exceeded the next highest rural transit provider in Iowa by over 250,000 rides. Lander emphasized the importance of accessible transportation for employment, medical appointments, and daily activities.
In addition to transport services, the Southwest Iowa Planning Council (SWIPCO) has focused on community development and affordable housing initiatives, completing 16 projects valued at over $49 million. Notable projects include the construction of 90 affordable homes in Glenwood, supported by Community Development Block Grants.
With ongoing projects slated for 2025, including disaster recovery funding for affordable housing, SWIPCO continues to positively impact the quality of life in southwest Iowa, addressing critical needs like housing security and community development.
