Remembering Bob Hines: A Legacy of Kindness and Community

Robert E. Hines Jr., an 85-year-old native of Harlan, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Bob was born on January 27, 1940, to Robert and Kathryn Hines. He graduated from Harlan High School in 1958 and cherished his upbringing in Harlan and at his family's cabin in Minnesota. Bob continued his education at Grinnell College and the University of Iowa, studying Communications and Political Science.

In 1964, he married fellow Harlan resident Deborah D’Arcy and later moved to Alexandria, Minnesota, where he built a successful career in broadcasting. Bob was dedicated to community service, being involved with the Kiwanis Club and the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, among others.

Known for his humor and storytelling, Bob’s life was marked by his commitment to helping others through recovery programs, inspired by his experiences with Alcoholics Anonymous.

He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and community spirit.
