Remembering Mary Clare Wise Klindt: A Harlan Treasure

Mary Clare Wise Klindt, a cherished member of the Harlan community, passed away on January 6, 2025, at Elm Crest nursing home, just shy of her 101st birthday. Born on January 31, 1924, in Pottawattamie County, she was raised by her aunt and uncle after her mother's passing.

Mary graduated from Shelby High School in 1943 and married Leonard John Klindt later that year at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avoca. Together, they farmed for decades and raised five children: Kathleen, Lois, Lynn, Dale, and Dean. Known for her devotion as a farm wife, Mary enjoyed gardening, sewing, and sharing stories about her vibrant life.

After Leonard's passing in 1990, she continued living on their family farm for 80 years, contributing to her community by cleaning the church and caring for her loved ones.

Mary is survived by her four children, multiple grandchildren, and friends who will remember her wit and wisdom. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on January 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avoca.
