Shelby County Auditor Assures Voters About Absentee Ballots

The Shelby County Auditor’s Office is addressing voter concerns regarding the multiple absentee ballot request forms some residents have received in the mail. Auditor Mark Maxwell reassured voters that only one ballot per person will be sent out, as the office carefully records applications and any duplicates are dismissed but kept on file.

Starting October 16, ballots will be mailed to individuals who have filed requests. Voters can also cast absentee ballots in person at the courthouse, located at 612 Court Street in Harlan. However, requests for mailed ballots must be received by the Auditor's office by 5 p.m. on October 21. No ballots will be sent for requests received after this date.

Importantly, all mail-in ballots must be returned to the Auditor's office by 8 p.m. on Election Day, November 5, to be counted. Residents interested in voting absentee by mail can download a request form from the Iowa Secretary of State’s website or call the Shelby County Auditor’s Office at 712-755-3831, extension 6.
