Local authorities have confirmed that a tragic house fire in Harlan earlier this week resulted in the deaths of a mother and son.

The victims, 52-year-old Dominique Pontzius and her 24-year-old son Sebastian Pontzius, were found inside their home at 1108 3rd Street. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office determined that the fire was intentionally set by the occupants as an act of suicide.

Both individuals were pronounced dead at Myrtue Medical Center after being rescued by emergency responders. Notably, no foul play is suspected, and the investigation shows that no other individuals were involved.
