In a tragic incident early Thursday morning, March 6, a 36-year-old man was shot and killed by Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies during a standoff at a residence in Harlan, Iowa. Authorities responded to the home near College Place and Pine Street for a welfare check around 4:30 a.m. and found themselves negotiating with an armed individual, later identified as David Plagmann.

As negotiations progressed, deputies reported that Plagmann made aggressive movements toward them, prompting law enforcement to return fire. He later died at Myrtue Hospital in Harlan despite life-saving efforts.

Additionally, a 31-year-old woman, Alexis Martin, was found deceased in the home. The incident is currently under investigation by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, who have assured the community that there is no ongoing threat.

The scene remained taped off for much of the day as police conducted investigations, including the removal of both a body and a vehicle from the property.
