Beloved Harlan Community Member Bob Carey Passes Away at 65
The Harlan community mourns the loss of Robert James Carey, who passed away at 65. A dedicated volunteer and sports enthusiast, Bob touched many lives with his humor and passion. His legacy will be honored at a memorial service next summer.
Robert James Carey, a beloved member of the Harlan community, passed away at the age of 65 on November 21, 2024, in his home. Born on July 25, 1959, in Panama, Iowa, Bob had a strong foundation in Catholic education, attending St. Mary’s Grade School and later graduating from Harlan High School in 1977.
Bob went on to attend Iowa State University on a full ROTC scholarship, earning his degree in 1981 before serving four years as a U.S. Army officer. Though he spent many years in San Antonio, he returned to Harlan in 2016 to care for his mother.
A dedicated sports enthusiast, Bob contributed his time to the Harlan Cyclones by keeping statistics for their baseball and football teams and also worked with the Southwest Iowa Transit Agency. His vibrant sense of humor and passion for vintage TV shows were cherished by all who knew him.
Bob is survived by three siblings, two nieces, and five nephews. A memorial service is set to take place next summer.
