Ella Mae Staiert, a beloved member of the Harlan community, passed away on August 24, 2024, at the age of 99. A lifelong resident of Iowa, she was born on July 7, 1925, near Mt. Carmel and grew up on her family farm.
Ella Mae married Walter Staiert in 1945, and together they raised ten children while operating farms in Maple River and Elk Horn. In 2007, they moved to Harlan, where Ella Mae became known for her exceptional cooking, especially her pies and cookies, earning her the nickname "cookie Grandma."
Active in her church, she was an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan and participated in the Ladies Guild. In her later years, Ella Mae enjoyed life at Hansen House Senior Living, fostering strong relationships with staff and fellow residents.
Her passing is deeply felt by her family, including nineteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on August 31 at St. Michael’s, followed by burial at Harlan Cemetery.
