Harlan Faces Unprecedented Tornado Outbreak on Veterans Day

On November 11, 2015, Iowa experienced its largest November tornado outbreak, causing significant impact across the southern half of the state.

Over 20 tornadoes formed on Veterans Day, coinciding with a powerful low-pressure system that brought unusual warmth and moisture to the region. In Harlan and surrounding Shelby County, tornadoes caused damage to farm properties and tree lines, but thankfully, there were no fatalities reported.

One notable tornado rated EF-1 crossed near Harlan Municipal Airport, with wind speeds reaching up to 110 mph. Although it lifted before causing major destruction at the airport, local homes and outbuildings were affected.

Statewide, 19 tornadoes were confirmed, with the total damage estimated between $3 million and $5 million. Communities braced for severe weather that day, and many residents found themselves reflective not only of the weather but also of the sacrifices made by veterans.
