Homecoming Parade Celebrates Harlan's Baton Twirling Legacy
Last Friday, Harlan's Homecoming parade brought together former baton twirlers, reviving a cherished local tradition. Organized by Vicki Strissel, this nostalgic reunion celebrated baton twirling's legacy, showcasing alumni's skills and plans for future gatherings.
A cherished tradition was revived last Friday as a group of former baton twirlers from Harlan Community High School gathered to perform during the Homecoming parade and pregame event.
Organized by Vicki Strissel, whose daughter Emeri is the school’s current baton twirler, the reunion aimed to reignite interest in baton twirling, a cherished activity in the community. Joined by Judy Nelson, a former baton coach, they reached out to twirlers from as far back as 1955.
The diverse lineup of performers included alumni from various graduating classes, showcasing their skills while wearing custom shirts designed by Emeri. The routine was relaxed, allowing twirlers to perform what they remembered from their past.
Both Strissel and Nelson received tremendous support from the crowd, with many expressing joy and nostalgia at seeing the twirlers back in action.
Plans are underway for future reunions, aiming to gather even more former baton twirlers to celebrate this beloved local tradition.
