Remembering Hazel Muller: A Harlan Community Icon

Hazel Emma Marie (Bauer) Muller, a cherished member of the Harlan community, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024, at the age of 98. Born on February 27, 1926, near Buck Grove, Iowa, Hazel later moved to Harlan where she graduated from high school in 1943.

In 1948, she married Darell Don Muller and together they established their life on a farm southwest of Harlan, raising three daughters and celebrating the joys of family with two grandsons. Hazel was known for her creativity, enjoying hobbies such as embroidery and oil painting, and had a long history of community involvement, including 22 years at the Shelby County Fair and contributions to the Tennant Church rummage sale.

Hazel’s dedication to her family and community earned her a spot in the Shelby County Hall of Fame in 1998. Visitation will take place on December 12, 2024, from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a memorial service on December 13 at 11:30 a.m. at Heartland Funeral Home in Harlan.
